![]() We got to tell a lot of the romantic stuff early on, and it was very playful. ![]() Then that allows you to open up and flourish. No, this is a man with a mission and a passion, and I think because of that we knew that we were in good hands. Ken really changed Sebastian's life, so it's not just a director who's telling a story. Sebastian knows Ken, he got the blessing from Ken, and he loves Ken. Did that help foster the feeling of connection and the need to rely only on each other? It's such an intimate setting, with just the director who also wrote the script and the two leads. And how can you not love them after you read the book or watch this movie? I just had so much love for these characters as well, because I read the book. I realized then that I could try and mimic, or attempt to be like Ken as much as I can - but at a certain point, I had to let that go and really just pay attention to the story. But at a certain point, I had to let go of that, because when you're talking to someone it's different than when you're just being yourself and being who you are. I had nine days to prepare, so I locked myself away and just studied Ken through YouTube videos by watching his talks. And then when the character is actually still alive and might even see the movie, it's an extra layer of nerves.īut to be honest, I didn't have time to really think about it. ![]() Stuart Townsend: You know, it's nerve-racking when you're playing a real life character. How different is it to approach a character that is a real person alive today? Ken is not only a real person, but also one who is still present with us. To me, that's just such a beautiful love story. And by the end of it, he's not being afraid of her passing on and not being sad about her being passed on, but just being so admiring of her and having so much respect for her. He's hoping that, "We're going to get you better, and we're going to do this and that, and everything's going to be great." And then it's not, and he has to have that acceptance that she's going to pass on. He wasn't a caretaker, but his love for her made him that. ![]() What she goes through by the end, how she is just so strong and present and accepting of her fate, and how he sacrificed his creative career to become a caretaker. I just felt that it was a very mature love story, and Treya herself is heroic - both of them in their own ways are. And it was a journey that unfortunately many of us have to go through, in terms of the illness. Stuart Townsend: I think that it wasn't just a conventional love story that it was a love story that was transcendent because of the journey that these two characters had to go through. What was it about Grace and Grit that moved you most and made you want to get on board? ![]()
